Kako odmjeriti hrabrost eksperimenta i preciznost klasične filmske naracije? Kako presuditi između emocije i forme, između ideje i izvedbe?

Svaka odluka zato nosi dozu sumnje.

Tokom ovih dana gledali smo filmove različitih žanrova, tema i senzibiliteta.

Message from the Jury President

Each festival edition begins as a series of films and ends as a series of meetings. Encounters with people we’ve never met, with lives we’ve never lived and with questions we often don’t have the answer to ourselves.

Being a member of the jury is not just about choosing the best. First of all, it means accepting the responsibility that different film languages, poetics, aesthetics and author’s manuscripts cannot always be measured by the same yardstick. How do you compare a film that conquered you with silence to one that shook you with the power of words? How to measure the courage of the experiment and the precision of the classic film narration? How to judge between emotion and form, between idea and performance?

Every decision therefore carries a dose of doubt. And it is this doubt that makes us honest. She reminds us that no award can fully encompass the value of art, nor can every exceptional film win recognition.

During these days we watched films of different genres, themes and sensibilities. Some challenged us, some consoled us, some disturbed us, and some left us speechless. Each of them brought a sincere attempt to understand the world, to question it or at least to stop it for a moment.

In the end, the awards we present tonight are not the final judgment on the value of films. They are a reflection of a moment, a dialogue and a shared belief that these achievements in a special way touched all of us who had the honor of evaluating them.

That’s why tonight we don’t just celebrate the winners. We celebrate the courage of creation, the diversity of cinematic expression and the belief that art, despite all differences, still finds its way to man.

Thank you to all the authors for trusting us, thank you to the audience for sharing this experience with us, and thank you to the film – which reminds us year after year that the best questions are often more important than the final answers.

FIFFP AWARDS 2026

AWARDS FOR THE BEST FOREIGN FILM – Orenda, directed by Pirjo Honkasalo

Nagrada za najbolje ostvarenje u kategoriji strani film ostvarenju Orenda rediteljke Pirjo Honkasalo. Preciznom i vizuelno sugestivnom režijom, Honkasalo pretvara surovi pejzaž arhipelaga u ravnopravnog učesnika drame i unutrašnji prostor svojih junakinja. Scenario Pirkko Saisio gradi slojevitu priču o gubitku, krivici, vjeri i iskupljenju, ostavljajući dovoljno prostora tišini, slutnji i neizgovorenom. Izuzetne glumačke izvedbe Alme Pöysti i Pirkko Saisio stvaraju snažan odnos, čija se napetost razvija kroz poglede, geste i pažljivo odmjerene riječi. Zbog skladnog jedinstva režije, scenarija i glumačke igre, Orenda se izdvaja kao duboko promišljeno, emotivno i estetski zaokruženo filmsko ostvarenje.

EN: Award for Best Foreign Film to Orenda, directed by Pirjo Honkasalo. Through precise and visually evocative direction, Honkasalo transforms the austere landscape of the archipelago into an active presence in the drama and a reflection of her characters’ inner worlds. Pirkko Saisio’s screenplay creates a multilayered exploration of loss, guilt, faith and redemption, leaving space for silence, intuition and the unspoken. The outstanding performances of Alma Pöysti and Pirkko Saisio shape a powerful relationship whose tension unfolds through glances, gestures and carefully measured words. With its remarkable unity of direction, writing and performance, Orenda stands out as a deeply thoughtful, emotionally resonant and artistically accomplished work.

The Award for Best Actress – Alma Pöysti as Nora in the film Orenda

EN: The Award for Best Actress is presented to Alma Pöysti for her portrayal of Nora in Orenda. Pöysti creates a woman whose grief is conveyed not through grand gestures, but gradually revealed through restlessness, restraint, glances and silence. Her performance combines vulnerability with inner strength, allowing us to sense the guilt, anger and profound longing for forgiveness beneath Nora’s distant exterior. Its particular power lies in Pöysti’s commanding yet understated screen presence, which holds our attention even in moments of complete stillness. Alma Pöysti delivers an emotionally precise and deeply layered performance that remains with the viewer long after the film has ended

Award for Best Directing in Foreign Film Competition  – Mecenaten / The Patron, Julia Thelin

Preciznim vođenjem glumaca, kontrolisanim mizanscenom i postepenim zgušnjavanjem ritma, rediteljka pretvara naizgled bezazlenu igru identiteta u uznemirujuću psihološku dramu. Napetost gradi pogledima, pauzama, promjenama položaja likova u prostoru i neprestanim pomjeranjem odnosa moći. Julia Thelin pokazuje izrazitu rediteljsku zrelost, stvarajući provokativan film o klasnim razlikama, privilegijama, umjetnosti i ljudskoj potrebi da barem nakratko postanemo neko drugi.

EN: The Special Award for Directing in the Foreign Film Competition goes to Julia Thelin for Mecenaten (The Patron). Through precise work with the actors, controlled mise-en-scène and a gradually intensifying rhythm, the director transforms an apparently harmless game of identity into an unsettling psychological drama. The tension is built through glances, pauses, the characters’ shifting positions within the space and the constant redistribution of power. The direction moves confidently between playfulness, seduction, discomfort and psychological violence. Julia Thelin demonstrates remarkable directorial maturity, creating a provocative film about class, privilege, art and the human desire to become someone else, if only for a moment.

Award for The Best Actor  – Adam Lundgren as Olof in Biodlaren (The Quiet Beekeeper)

Adam Lundgren ostvaruje izuzetno zrelu, suptilnu i emocionalno preciznu glumačku kreaciju.

Upravo ta suzdržanost čini njegovu izvedbu snažnom i uvjerljivom.

Njegov odnos s kćerkom predstavlja emocionalno jezgro filma, a način na koji gradi taj odnos kroz sitne promjene u ponašanju i neverbalnoj komunikaciji pokazuje glumačku zrelost najvišeg nivoa.

Zbog izuzetne autentičnosti, emocionalne istinitosti i sposobnosti da složen unutrašnji svijet lika prenese minimalističkim glumačkim sredstvima.  Adama Lundgrena za nagradu za najboljeg glavnog glumca za ulogu Olofa u filmu Biodlaren.

EN: Adam Lundgren delivers an exceptionally mature, subtle, and emotionally precise acting performance. His Olof is a man carrying the weight of loss, illness, and unspoken feelings, and the actor manages to convey this inner drama almost without grand words. His interpretation rests on gaze, silence, gesture, and facial expression – which demands exceptional acting discipline and confidence.

Lundgren never resorts to pathos nor attempts to impose emotion on the audience. On the contrary, he builds a character that feels completely authentic and true to life, allowing the viewer to discover for themselves the depth of his pain, love, and helplessness. It is precisely this restraint that makes his performance powerful and convincing.

His relationship with his daughter forms the emotional core of the film, and the way he constructs that relationship through subtle changes in behavior and non-verbal communication demonstrates acting maturity at the highest level.

Due to his exceptional authenticity, emotional truthfulness, and ability to convey the complex inner world of the character through minimalist acting means, we nominate Adam Lundgren for the award for Best Lead Actor for his role as Olof in the film Biodlaren (The Beekeeper).

The Award for Best Film in the Domestic Competition – Sutra ujutro/Tomorrow Morning, directed by Jani Bojadži

EN: The Award for Best Film in the Domestic Competition goes to Tomorrow Morning, directed by Jani Bojadži. Through the destinies of two women and their families, the film powerfully connects intimate drama with the broader political and social realities of contemporary North Macedonia. Its layered dramatic structure reveals how decisions made within centres of power are most often paid for by those who had no part in making them. The film is distinguished by its courageous authorial perspective, strong ensemble cast and ability to translate complex social questions into immediate human experience. Tomorrow Morning is an engaged, emotionally compelling and socially relevant work that refuses to offer easy answers.

The Award for Best Actress in Domestic Competition shared equally – Nina Dean and Irena Ilievska for Tomorrow Morning/Sutra ujutro

Nagradu za najbolju žensku ulogu ravnopravno dijele Nina Dean i Irena Ilievska za film Sutra ujutro. Tumačeći dvije žene iz različitih društvenih sredina, glumice stvaraju snažne i međusobno dopunjujuće portrete otpora, dostojanstva i borbe za vlastitu istinu. Nina Dean kontrolisanom i unutrašnje preciznom igrom otkriva ranjivost skrivenu iza odlučnosti svoje junakinje, dok Irena Ilievska neposrednim i emocionalno ogoljenim izrazom prenosi težinu proživljene nepravde. Njihove izvedbe nose dramsku i moralnu snagu filma, pretvarajući društveni sukob u duboko lično iskustvo.

EN: The Award for Best Actress is shared equally by Nina Dean and Irena Ilievska for Tomorrow Morning. Portraying two women from different social backgrounds, the actresses create powerful and complementary portraits of resistance, dignity and the struggle for personal truth. Through a controlled and internally precise performance, Nina Dean reveals the vulnerability beneath her character’s determination, while Irena Ilievska conveys the weight of injustice with raw emotional intensity. Their performances carry the film’s dramatic and moral force, transforming a social conflict into a deeply personal experience. The award honours two equally courageous, compelling and memorable performances.

Award for the Best Sound of Music – composer Adam Nordén, in Dr Glas.

EN: The award for Best Musical Score is presented to the film Dr Glas and composer Adam Nordén. Nordén demonstrates a refined and nuanced sensibility in capturing contemporary musical expression among the younger generation, skillfully supporting the film’s narrative through a seamless fusion of classical and contemporary elements – a synthesis that resonates both in interpretation of the literature work and on the cinematic screen.

Award for Best Directing in Domestic Competition  – Nikola Vukčević for Obraz (The Tower of Strength).

Zbog dosljedne autorske vizije, izuzetno oblikovanog filmskog jezika, emocionalne snage i univerzalne poruke o hrabrosti, časti i solidarnosti.

EN: The award for Best Director of a Feature in Domestic Comeptition is presented to the film Obraz (The Face), directed by Nikola Vukčević, for its exceptional artistic integrity, powerful directorial vision, and deeply humanistic message that transcends the historical and geographical context in which the story is set.

Obraz is not merely a war drama. It is a film about honor, moral responsibility, and the strength of humanity in a time when fear and hatred threatened to overpower fundamental human values. Through restrained and precise direction, convincing acting performances, and a carefully crafted visual expression, the film builds tension not through spectacle, but through the weight of the moral choices faced by its characters.

Film’s particular value in its ability to tell universal ethical dilemmas without simplification and without dividing into “us” and “them.” At the heart of the story remains man and his decision to preserve the dignity and life of another, even at the cost of personal sacrifice.

One of the film’s most powerful symbols is prayer, which functions not merely as a religious act, but as a universal expression of hope, compassion, reconciliation, and inner strength. Through this motif, the film reminds us that true faith lies not in divisions, but in man’s ability to recognize another human being. Prayer becomes a quiet bridge between different identities and a powerful affirmation that humanity can overcome violence.

For its consistent authorial vision, exceptionally crafted cinematic language, emotional power, and universal message of courage, honor, and solidarity.

The Award for Best Short Film goes to After the Party, by Stefan Tomić.

EN: The Award for Best Short Film goes to After the Party, directed by Stefan Tomić. Following writer Stevo Grabovac during the ten days preceding the announcement of the NIN Literary Award, the film offers a humorous, warm and unassuming portrait of a writer’s everyday life. Much of its charm arises from the contrast between Grabovac’s quiet routine, his work in a shop and the anticipation of one of the region’s most important literary honours. With genuine curiosity and subtle humour, the director observes a man whose exceptional qualities never demand attention, but gradually reveal themselves. After the Party is an entertaining, engaging and intimate portrait of a writer, as well as a film about the unpredictable moment when ordinary life becomes part of literary history.

The Award for Best Feature Documentary goes to One Man Avalanche, directed by Slobodanka Radun – Čovjek lavina, Slobodanka Radun

Nagrada za najbolji dugometražni dokumentarni film dodjeljuje se filmu Čovjek lavina rediteljke Slobodanke Radun. Kroz arhivske snimke, muziku i svjedočenja porodice, prijatelja i saradnika, film gradi emotivan i dinamičan portret Dragoljuba Đuričića, jednog od najznačajnijih bubnjara nekadašnje Jugoslavije. Njegova vanserijska energija, harizma i strast prema muzici postaju pokretačka snaga filma i daju mu ritam koji daleko prevazilazi okvir klasične biografije.

EN: The Award for Best Feature Documentary goes to One Man Avalanche, directed by Slobodanka Radun. Through archival footage, music and testimonies from family members, friends and collaborators, the film creates an emotional and dynamic portrait of Dragoljub Đuričić, one of the most significant drummers of the former Yugoslavia. His extraordinary energy, charisma and passion for music become the film’s driving force, giving it a rhythm that reaches far beyond the conventions of a traditional biography. The film successfully connects Đuričić’s artistic journey with the history of rock culture, social resistance and the struggle for freedom throughout the former Yugoslavia. One Man Avalanche leaves a powerful impression because it not only documents what Dragoljub Đuričić achieved, but also preserves and transmits the life force with which he inspired everyone around him.

SPECIAL AWARDS

Special Awards for Author’s Film Concept –  7 steps/7Steg, Andreas Öhman

Zbog originalnosti ideje, dosljednosti autorskog izraza i uspješne transformacije jednog intimnog emocionalnog iskustva u prepoznatljiv filmski koncept, film 7 steg (7 Steps), u režiji Andreasa Öhmana, dobija Specijalnu nagradu žirija za autorski koncept.

EN: What sets this film apart is its courageously conceived and consistently developed authorial idea. The concept of seven stages of a romantic relationship is not used merely as a narrative framework, but as a means to explore emotions, memories, and the complexity of interpersonal relationships. The film succeeds in blending intimate drama, romance, and elements of mystery into a cohesive whole that bears a distinctive authorial stamp.

I particularly appreciate the way in which the direction and screenplay build the story through fragments, atmosphere, and emotional states, leaving the viewer room to actively participate in its interpretation. Such an approach demands authorial courage and trust in the language of cinema, rather than relying on conventional storytelling.

Although the film may provoke different readings and reactions, it is precisely in this that I see its value. 7 Steps does not offer simple answers, but invites the audience to reflect on love, loss, memory, and transience, remaining true to its own artistic vision.

For the originality of its idea, the consistency of its authorial expression, and the successful transformation of an intimate emotional experience into a distinctive cinematic concept, the film 7 Steps (7 steg) , directed by Andreas Öhman , receives the Special Jury Award for Author’s Concept.

Special Jury Award for Sound Design – Maricel by Elias Demetriou/

Kroz precizno oblikovane ambijentalne zvukove, pažljivo doziranu muziku i izražajnu upotrebu tišine, film gradi atmosferu u kojoj zvuk postaje produžetak iskustva glavnog lika.

Upravo zbog njegove umjetničke preciznosti, emocionalne snage i organske povezanosti s režijom, žiri dodjeljuje nagradu za najbolji dizajn zvuka filmu „Maricel“ reditelja Elias Demetriou.

EN: The award for Best Sound Design is presented to the film Maricel for its exceptionally thoughtful and subtle use of sound as an equal narrative device. The soundscape does not merely serve to shape the space of the action, but becomes an expression of the protagonist’s inner world, following her emotional state, feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and gradual psychological transformation.

Through precisely crafted ambient sounds, carefully dosed music, and expressive use of silence, the film builds an atmosphere in which sound becomes an extension of the main character’s experience. In this way, the viewer does not merely observe her story but emotionally lives through it.

The sound design in this film serves as an example of how sound can deepen characterisation and enhance dramatic effect, making sound one of the key carriers of cinematic expression. Precisely for its artistic precision, emotional power, and organic connection with the direction, the jury awards the prize for Best Sound Design to the film Maricel, directed by Elias Demetriou.
