Kuchomoza

Zanzibar,2024 short documentary 5’ 30’’

On the vibrant, tradition-bound shores of Zanzibar, Aisha, a young seaweed farmer, yearns for a life beyond the horizon. Trapped by societal constraints forbidding women from the exhilarating freedom of kitesurfing and open-water swimming, she dreams of the vast ocean. Feeling suffocated by routine, a quiet rebellion stirs within her. Defying expectations, Aisha embarks on a solitary journey into the deep blue, where the waves become her sanctuary. This experimental drama, woven with powerful visuals and a soulful original score of local music, captures Aisha’s transformative voyage from confinement to liberation, celebrating the indomitable spirit of a woman breaking free and rising above societal norms – a concept embodied by the Swahili word ‘Kuchomosa,’ meaning Rising.

This short film, born from the International Youth Media Summit in Zanzibar, brought together a diverse group of young filmmakers and locals to offer a glimpse into women’s realities on the paradise-like island. Through close collaboration with the local community and artists, the crew created this non-profit film as a collective project, striving for cultural authenticity.
